On September 17, members of the CMU community gathered in the Sustainability Studio of Hunt Library to celebrate Constitution Day with a hands-on DIY workshop. Attendees designed and crafted postcards to be shared with friends, family, and peers to encourage them to get to the ballot box on Election Day.

Aleena Siddiqui, a rising junior with a double major in materials science and engineering and environmental and sustainability studies, has received the 2024 Udall Scholar award, which recognizes future leaders in environmental, Tribal public policy, and health care fields.

Carnegie Mellon University released its fourth Voluntary University Review of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on April 1. The VUR catalogs activities by students, faculty and staff to advance the SDGs, also known as the Global Goals, and reflects Carnegie Mellon’s long-standing efforts to sustainably address society's most pressing needs.

In one of many ongoing efforts to reduce the destruction caused by landmines globally, three Carnegie Mellon University students were selected by Mines Action Canada and CMU’s Sustainability Initiative to visit the United Nations and participate in the 21st Meeting of the States Parties to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction.

Since finding a permanent home in the University Libraries, it has grown as a convener, bringing students, researchers, and other contributors together. Now, Director Alexandra Hiniker is finding ways to share her technical expertise and experience with an even broader group across the region through the DISCOVER network.

This summer, the Sustainability Initiative interns — Ishwrya Achuthan Geetha, Bethel Endawoke, Camden Johnson, and myself — received an email with this as the subject line from Alex Hiniker, director of the Sustainability Initiative. We all excitedly responded “yes”. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to tour the United Nations, sit in on various sessions, engage with leaders across America, and truly to see the broader vision of our work at Carnegie Mellon.
