Apply Now: Undergraduate Sustainability Fellowships Open

The Sustainability Initiative is pleased to partner with the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholar Development to offer five new Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships. These fellowships will fund summer research focused specifically on the Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals. Fellowships applications are open now, and close on Feb. 18, 2026.

Fellow Spotlight: Wendy Wang

Meet the 2025-2026 Sustainability Interns

Laying the Groundwork for Change

Now, five years from 2030, the target year for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), issues related to equity and justice have taken on new urgency. At this pivotal moment, Carnegie Mellon University is focused on creating Sustainable Futures. Directed by Ambassador Sarah E. Mendelson, Distinguished Service Professor of Public Policy, and supported by Dean Keith Webster and Associate Dean Sayeed Choudhury, Sustainable Futures is designed to re-imagine global development and help democracies deliver for all.

“Metamorphosis: A Sustainable Art Gallery & Fashion Showcase” Photo Gallery

On April 16, visitors from around the Pittsburgh community joined the Pittsburgh Youth Leaders in Sustainability network and the Youth Climate Advocacy Committee for “Metamorphosis: A Sustainable Art Gallery & Fashion Showcase” at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The free event hosted a variety of activities for youth and families, plant-forward appetizers, sustainable art vendors, information and education tables, and a youth sustainable art and fashion contest and gallery.

United Nations Workshop Photo Gallery

On March 20 and 21, the Carnegie Mellon Sustainability Initiative team traveled to the United Nations in New York City for a workshop hosted by the United Nations Academic Impact to discuss implementation of the Global Goals with other universities. Director Alex Hiniker designed and led the convening, with participation from the four current interns: Purva Bommireddy, a senior in the College of Engineering, Ameena George, a first-year in the Tepper School of Business, Cristina Goeller, a second year masters student at Heinz College, and myself, a junior in the College of Engineering.

Pathways to Impact: Careers in Sustainability Photo Gallery

On Sunday, Feb. 16, the Pittsburgh Youth Leaders in Sustainability network — led by members of CMU’s Sustainability Initiative team — hosted Pathways to Impact: Careers in Sustainability. Students from universities across Pittsburgh gathered to connect with 10 different employers from sustainability-related organizations to network, discuss goals and challenges, and explore potential career options.
