DEI Book Display: Diversity in Music

The focus for this month's Diversity Book Display is music, which is universal and incredibly diverse. Not only is there a huge variety of styles and sounds that humans define as music, but the people who make music are composed of many different cultures, nations, eras, genders, nationalities, religions, and so forth.

2023 Giving CMU Day “Levels Up” Libraries’ Impact

The ninth annual Giving CMU Day was celebrated on campus and online on Tuesday, November 28. With the support of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends of the University Libraries and the Integrative Design, Arts, and Technology (IDeATe) network, over $11,000 was raised for four priority funds: Friends of the Library, Special Collections Acquisition Fund, Enhance Library Learning Spaces, and IDeATe.

Event Recording: Heading to the Point: A Journey through History

On November 15, the University Libraries and Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer Wanda Heading-Grant hosted "Heading to the Point: A Journey through History, Exploring the Black Urban Experience in Pittsburgh." The event featured a conversation between Heading-Grant and Giant Eagle University Professor of History and Social Justice Joe William Trotter, Jr. A recording of the event is now available.

Sustainability Initiative and DISCOVER Network Join Forces Toward Regional Sustainability

At Carnegie Mellon, the Sustainability Initiative is committed to amplifying sustainability efforts across education, research, and practices. Since finding a permanent home in the University Libraries, it has grown as a convener, bringing students, researchers, and other contributors together. Now, Director Alexandra Hiniker is finding ways to share her technical expertise and experience with an even broader group across the region through the DISCOVER network.

Music Collection Highlights

Music materials are located on the fourth floor of Hunt Library. There are approximately 13,000 print books, 25,000 scores, 13,000 LPs, 9,700 CDs, and 80 journal titles. Learn more from Kristin Health, Music & Catalog Librarian.

New Chatbot Facilitates Off-Hours Questions

“Ask Andy,” the University Libraries live chat service, offers a way for Libraries experts to respond to questions from the community on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Now, beginning November 10, the Libraries is piloting a new chatbot in order to address user questions during weekends and overnight hours when staff is not on duty.

From the University Archives: Joe William Trotter, Jr. Papers

This fall, the Carnegie Mellon University Archives is processing the academic papers of Giant Eagle University Professor of History and Social Justice Joe William Trotter, Jr. With the addition of this collection to the Archives, Trotter’s research on social justice and the Black urban experience will become accessible for a new generation of scholars working to build a more equitable future for all.

Book Review: "Death in Custody"

Jan Hardy, Library Specialist, reviews "Death in Custody." This book traces the history of racism in law enforcement through the post-Civil War practice of convict leasing, the widespread arrest of free Black men for trumped-up charges and their forced labor on farms and in mines.
