And in the frenzy of navigating new classes, new friends, and a new city, they may not think to explore the resources the University Libraries makes available to them at the beginning of their academic journey.

Posner Center Renovation Reimagines Space for Special Collections

Special Collections, CMU’s repository for rare books, manuscripts, and early calculating devices and cryptographic machines, is a unique campus resource that illuminates the history of science and technology. Thanks to an $8 million commitment from the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh, the University Libraries is transforming the Posner Center into a dedicated Special Collections library, updating and expanding the space in order to engage the CMU and greater Pittsburgh community on a wider scale.

Open Access By the Numbers

KiltHub is a comprehensive institutional repository maintained by the University Libraries and hosted on the figshare platform, where Carnegie Mellon University researchers and their collaborators can share the scholarly outputs and research data produced in the course of their research. KiltHub curates, collects, preserves, and provides open access to this material as part of the Libraries' commitment to open scholarship and collaboration. We’re highlighting the download and upload numbers from March and April, along with the most-downloaded article across both months.

“Living History: Tracing CMU Culture Through Student Organizations” Photo Gallery

More than 100 visitors joined the Libraries Student Advisory Council at their end-of-year showcase on Tuesday, April 22. “Living History: Tracing CMU Culture Through Student Organizations” celebrated the history and impact of student organizations on campus, inviting the CMU community to engage with primary sources and other historic materials that tell the story of how these groups have helped shape the culture of the university.

5 Questions with New STEM Librarian Kristen Scotti

In October 2023, we welcomed our second Open Science Postdoctoral Associate, Kristen Scotti, after she completed her PhD in Materials Science & Engineering at Northwestern University. Now, like her predecessor in the role Chasz Griego, Scotti is transitioning to a full-time role in the Libraries as a STEM Librarian supporting the Math, Physics, and Statistics & Data Science Departments. To mark the occasion, we asked Kristen a few questions about what she did in her postdoc and how she plans to bring her experience in that position to her new role.

Meet the Libraries Student Workers

At the University Libraries, more than 30 students are part of the team that keeps facilities open and services available for the CMU community. These students staff the circulation desks at both Hunt and Sorrells libraries, serve as Stacks Assistants, assist the University Archives and the Sustainability Initiative with processing collections and engaging in outreach, and more.
