Please join us in welcoming Alex Daniels to the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries as Digital Archivist. Prior to joining the Libraries, Alex was earning his Master’s in Information Sciences and working as a graduate intern for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. We asked Alex, who uses he/him/his pronouns, a few questions about himself and his plans for his new role.

The Carnegie Mellon University Archives is home to more than 100 years of CMU history — but it doesn’t tell the full story of the university. Founded in 1988, the Archives is relatively new compared to other academic archives at similar institutions, and is still missing documentation of various student groups and campus initiatives. In addition, traditional collecting methods have led to a collection of materials, records, and artifacts that skews predominantly straight, white, and male.

From 1968 to 2017 the Carnegie Mellon Action Project (C-MAP) — later renamed the Carnegie Mellon Advising Resource Center (CMARC) — provided a space to gather, find support, and build community for Black and underrepresented students at a predominantly white institution.

Thanks to a 2021 gift from Michael and Lonna Smith, the Libraries’ Digitization Lab, in close partnership with the University Archives, has now completed the first year of a four-year project to digitize this extensive collection.
