Open science, which refers to the practice of sharing research, data, and findings freely with the public, is becoming increasingly common as recognition of its benefits grows. It aims to make science more transparent, easier to reproduce, and open to more people, including students, researchers, and even curious citizens.

This fall, Carnegie Mellon University joined the Consortium for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine (CHSTM), a global network of institutions committed to advancing research, teaching, and collection development in these dynamic fields.

Peter Berndtson and Cornelia Brierly were influential midcentury modern architects known for their work around Pittsburgh, apprenticing under Frank Lloyd Wright and working on several of his famous projects before going on to start their own private practice in Pennsylvania. Their papers are held in the Carnegie Mellon University Architecture Arc

CMU Libraries is excited to announce a new tool to search journals for Open Access support. The Libraries has Open Access agreements with various publishers. This new platform can help authors to navigate the agreements and search for journals in one space. Authors can also see if their journal is instead eligible for the Libraries APC funds.

Carnegie Mellon University has introduced a new course, Core@CMU, that helps undergraduates develop the skills that serve as a foundation for their education at the university. The course is a 3-unit, semester-long requirement for all undergraduates. It is asynchronous and can be completed entirely online, allowing for flexibility and ease of access.

The Folger Shakespeare Library, which boasts the largest collection of Shakespeare in the world, is home to incredibly valuable resources and services that transform education and drive discovery about the early modern period. At the conclusion of two years of Shakespeare-focused programming at the University Libraries, Carnegie Mellon University has joined the Folger and more than 40 universities in the United States and abroad as a part of the Folger Institute Consortium. The Libraries will contribute a portion of the membership fee, which funds core institute activities.

July 2024 marks two years since Helen and Henry Posner, Jr. Dean of the University Libraries Keith Webster established the Carnegie Mellon University Open Source Programs Office (OSPO) with funds from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Led by Associate Dean for Digital Infrastructure Sayeed Choudhury, the OSPO has grown as a community resource for open source activity across campus, while continuing to provide strategic guidance and thought leadership in key areas.

The Libraries’ new Sci-Fi Station features a treasure trove of far-away worlds and futuristic conundrums, assembled mainly from Hugo and Nebula award finalists published over the past seven years. Located on the second floor of Hunt Library, the reading nook includes two private reading benches adorned with more than six dozen science fiction and fantasy novels, purchased with the Tom and Eileen McConomy Endowed Fund to whisk readers on a journey far from campus.
