Since launching one of the nation’s first open science programs in an academic library, Carnegie Mellon University Libraries has emerged as a national model for how libraries can lead in transparent, inclusive, and collaborative research. This fall, the Libraries will expand that leadership through a dynamic slate of training opportunities, community-building events, and published resources designed to equip researchers and librarians alike to work in the open.

On April 16, visitors from around the Pittsburgh community joined the Pittsburgh Youth Leaders in Sustainability network and the Youth Climate Advocacy Committee for “Metamorphosis: A Sustainable Art Gallery & Fashion Showcase” at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. The free event hosted a variety of activities for youth and families, plant-forward appetizers, sustainable art vendors, information and education tables, and a youth sustainable art and fashion contest and gallery.

More than 100 visitors joined the Libraries Student Advisory Council at their end-of-year showcase on Tuesday, April 22. “Living History: Tracing CMU Culture Through Student Organizations” celebrated the history and impact of student organizations on campus, inviting the CMU community to engage with primary sources and other historic materials that tell the story of how these groups have helped shape the culture of the university.

During Spring Carnival, the University Archives invited members of the CMU community to engage with the university’s past in “From Buggy To Bots: Explore CMU’s History with the University Archives.” The open house highlighted the Archives’ role on campus and its mission to preserve the legacy of Carnegie Mellon's history and traditions.

On March 20, the University Libraries hosted “Fine and Rare V: New Acquisitions in Libraries Special Collections.” At the virtual event, Curator of Special Collections Sam Lemley introduced some of the notable historical treasures in the collections. A recording of the event is now available.

As the 2025 spring semester comes to a close, the 2024-2025 Libraries Student Advisory Council (LSAC) is putting the finishing touches on their year-long archiving project to collect and preserve artifacts from student groups on campus. On Tuesday, April 22, join LSAC from 5–7 p.m. in Hunt Library’s IDeATe Studio B as they showcase primary sources and other historic materials in “Living History: Tracing CMU Culture Through Student Organizations.”

From March 3–5, CMU Libraries partnered with California-based cloud computing and bioinformatics company DNAnexus to host their fifth annual collaborative bioinformatics hackathon in Pittsburgh. More than 30 participants from all over the world teamed up to explore machine learning and AI approaches to computational biology problems, sharing expertise, learning from their peers, and even engaging in a bit of friendly competition.

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, the Libraries hosted its second annual Reproducibility Hackathon. 35 participants were challenged to replicate and augment published research, working with existing data and code to explore new possibilities for ideas and analyses and winning prizes for their contributions.
