DEI Book Display: U.S. Constitution

September 17th is Constitution (or Citizens) Day in the United States and, in conjunction, this month's Diversity Book Display will focus on the U.S. Constitution. Many civil rights, such as freedom of speech, voter rights and freedom of the press, are either a part of the Constitution itself, or were later added as amendments. The Supreme Court further defines these civil rights, often broadening who is included or protected.

Associate Director of Creative Heidi Wiren Kebe is developing a reputation at Carnegie Mellon. At the University Libraries, she’s helped establish a robust exhibition program. She’s also traveled across the United States and internationally to develop and exhibit her own creative work.

But while tuition and housing costs can be offset by scholarships and financial aid packages, there’s another expense students can routinely struggle to finance at the beginning of every semester — purchasing the many textbooks, access codes, and other course materials required for each of their classes.

Holes, Deckles, and Broken Types

[current-date:fallback]In CMU Special Collections is a copy of the US Bill of Rights printed in Philadelphia by Francis Childs and John Swain. The document is undated, but is usually assigned to January or February 1792. This edition is a grail of Americana: it is the first appearance of the Bill of Rights in print following ratification in 1791.
