Meet the 2023–2024 Libraries Student Advisory Council

This fall, the newest cohort of the Libraries Student Advisory Council (LSAC) has begun meeting to expand opportunities for communication between the Libraries and the CMU student body. A team of undergraduate and graduate students from across campus, along with members of the Libraries faculty and staff, will discuss input and feedback on Libraries services, collections, spaces, and events.

What to Call It and How to Search It

The Library of Congress, rule-maker for all U.S. libraries, approves subject headings to describe books and other items. (Subject headings work just like keywords.) Catalogers use these subject headings to find call numbers for books, so you can browse a shelf online or in person and find books on the same subject together.

Students at the UN General Assembly

This summer, the Sustainability Initiative interns — Ishwrya Achuthan Geetha, Bethel Endawoke, Camden Johnson, and myself — received an email with this as the subject line from Alex Hiniker, director of the Sustainability Initiative. We all excitedly responded “yes”. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity to tour the United Nations, sit in on various sessions, engage with leaders across America, and truly to see the broader vision of our work at Carnegie Mellon.

Bill Strickland, Oral History Highlights

Strickland’s love of ceramics began at Oliver High School with classes with Frank Ross. Then in 1968, while attending the University of Pittsburgh and amid city-wide protests and racial tensions, Bill Strickland set up a pottery studio in a Manchester row house, founding the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG).

Event Recording: Constitution Day 2023

In recognition of Constitution Day 2023, the University Libraries and the Division of Student Affairs hosted the virtual lecture, “Presidential Personalities and Constitutional Power Grabs in Latin America, 1945-2021,” about constitutions in Latin American countries and the efforts of presidents to alter them. A recording of the event is now available.

James H. Garrett, Jr., Oral History Highlights

In his oral history, Garrett compares the CMU of his student days to today. When he attended CMU in the late 1970s, the school was advertised as “the professional’s choice.” It was a place where companies would seek talent. The education was rigorous and that showed in the student retention rate.
