Libraries Student Advisory Council

The University Libraries Student Advisory Council is seeking new membership for the 2025-2026 academic year. All undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to apply.

Students who serve on the Libraries Student Advisory Council have the opportunity to gain a unique perspective on the operations of the Libraries, and obtain valuable expertise in student leadership, teamwork, and creativity. As the Libraries launches new AI tools and champions open science, builds new partnerships across campus, unveils exhibits exploring CMU history and rare treasures, and more, we need your input now more than ever.

Interested students should fill out this application form by Wednesday, September 17. Applicants will be notified directly about next steps.

Mapping Memories

Member Activities

This year’s Student Advisory Council will focus on exploring and growing the map resources available to the CMU campus community. Join Arts and Humanities Librarian Lynn Kawaratani to learn about how the CMU Architecture Archives collects, conserves and promotes the use of architectural records that document the architects and architecture of Carnegie Mellon University. You’ll discuss how the buildings themselves only tell part of the story, and what other aspects help inform our understanding of our surroundings and their connection to the past, present, and future of the institution.

Members will learn about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and storymapping, among other resources and tools, and work together in groups to construct their own personal representations of key areas on campus. At the end of the academic year, the Student Advisory Council will host a Libraries event open to the entire campus community to showcase the memories they’ve mapped around campus. Members will design an exhibit or activity, market the event to their peers, and attend alongside Kawaratani and GIS specialists to talk about the Architecture Archives, GIS services, and how Libraries resources can help the community connect to their surroundings and leave their mark on the spaces they inhabit.

Students will also have the opportunity to promote a channel of communication between the Libraries and student body on campus by providing input and feedback on Libraries services, collections, spaces, and events.
