Library Associate Dom Jebbia contributed to a paper “A FAIR and modular image-based workflow for knowledge discovery in the emerging field of imageomics” in Methods in Ecology and Evolution. The research is an extension of LEADING Fellowship work with the Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute team and the Ohio State University Imageomics Institute. The publication outlines technologies and best practices for creating an automated, reusable and modular workflow, and demonstrates how they promote the reuse of machine learning models and their adaptation for new research questions.
On April 23, STEM Librarian and Associate Dean for Faculty Matt Marsteller served as a panelist in the Lyrasis webinar "Successes in Open Access and Open Research Services" as a part of the Third Annual LyrOpen Fair. He discussed the SCOAP3 for Books (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) program and its impact. SCOAP3 for Books is an international effort to make particle physics book literature available for free on the Internet by covering the financial costs of the effort. Publishers include Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, and World Scientific.
Social Sciences Librarian and Director of the Evidence Synthesis Program Sarah Young co-organized the inaugural Evidence Synthesis Institute Conference with colleagues from the University of Minnesota and Cornell University Libraries. This hybrid event brought together over 200 participants online and in-person in Minneapolis in April to showcase work and build community around evidence synthesis in the non-health disciplines. This was the culminating event for a 3-year IMLS funded training institute held biannually since 2020. CMU Libraries kindly provided financial support for the virtual streaming of the event.
Business and Entrepreneurship Librarian Ryan Splenda presented twice at the 2024 Evidence Synthesis Institute Conference in Minneapolis, MN. The two presentations were: The Evolution of CMU Libraries' Evidence Synthesis Service: An Overview and Examining Undergraduate Research Opportunities Using Evidence Synthesis Methodology: A CMU Libraries Case Study.
Associate Dean for Research and Innovation Brian Mathews and Digital Projects and Publishing Specialist Talia Perry were interviewed via the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) regarding their work on the Opportunity Incubator.
Associate Director of Creative Heidi Wiren Kebe and fellow artists Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh, and Veronica Santiago Moniello have received a $5,000 sponsorship from the Tomayko Foundation to develop and premiere their performance HORSES & FOXES in early 2025.
Kebe, Hsieh, and Moniello present HORSES & FOXES, a 40-minute durational immersive performance with dance, sound, and sculpture performed live by the three artists, three women. This project is a synthesis of choreography and sound composition in which all elements are in constant conversation with one another; the materials used are strong yet elastic: steel, wood, glass, and ice. Depicting the shapeshifting quality of these creatures in folklore and the malleability of women kind. Built on the histories and mythologies of its namesake, HORSES & FOXES will take over Studio A at Pittsburgh’s WQED (The Fred Rogers Studio).
The performance will premiere in February 2025.
Kebe has also been invited to teach, lead, and perform with her collective, Propelled Animals, at the FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL NJAFANE and "La Ville En Mouv'ment" les Arts dans la Rue in coordination with the DAK’ART Biennial in Dakar, Senegal from Monday, May 13 - Saturday, May 25.
With the support of the Dakar Town Hall, the municipality of Grand Dakar, the French Embassy in Dakar, and Goethe Institute, this festival will be the fifth edition of the international contemporary dance, music, and theater gathering in Dakar.
Finally, Kebe is a selected presenter for LMDA (Literary Managers & Dramaturgs of the Americas) in Kansas City June 27-29, 2024. She will be presenting “Meeting Grief at the Crossroads: Ritual Dramaturgy” with Jen Shook, Assistant Professor of Theatre, Dance, & Performance Studies at Grinnell College.
