We celebrate the many contributions of the Libraries’ faculty and staff who make the Carnegie Mellon University Libraries the destination for scholarly information, creative inquiry and intellectual collaboration across disciplines, propelling the significance, reach and impact of the university.
Samuel Lemley, curator of special collections at Carnegie Mellon University Libraries, and Matthew Lincoln, former collections information architect at the Libraries, join Chris Warren, associate professor of English and associate department head, and Max G’Sell, assistant professor in the Department of Statistics & Data Science, on a project titled “Freedom and the Press before Freedom of the Press.” They received a $324,931 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to scale-up tools and methods to allow scholars to identify and decipher illicit printing in documents predating and associated with the First Amendment.
Principal Librarian Sarah Young and Librarian Melanie Gainey, together with Dr. Liz Wayne (Biomedical Engineering) and Dr. John Kitchin (Chemical Engineering), were awarded an Innovative Models for Undergraduate Research (IMUR) Fellowship for 2022. They will develop a model for undergraduate research focused on using evidence synthesis methods to answer a scientific question.
Library Associate Dom Jebbia and Data, Gaming, and Popular Culture Librarian Hannah Gunderman's talk "Oh Dear, We’re Queer: Work/Life Balance & Library School during COVID-19" was presented at the American Library Association's LibLearnX 2022 conference on January 22. Designer Heidi Wiren Kebe’s artist collective, Propelled Animals, was invited to share their creative practice at the National Performance Network (NPN) Annual Conference. Their piece “Opined for Intimacy” debuted during the Artist Showcase Watchparty on Thursday, January 27th. They were one of fourteen artist cohorts to be selected to share their work.
Designer Heidi Wiren Kebe’s co-authored article “DIS/UNITY” has been published by the University of California Press in Volume 2, Issue 4 Winter 2021 of “Resonance: The Journal of Sound and Culture.” Heidi is the primary author in collaboration with the Propelled Animals. The article focuses on their creative process and how sound is centered in their work.
Archivist Katherine Barbera and Robot Archive Processing Archivist Kathleen Donahoe have a new article in “Archival Outlook” from the Society of American Archivists. "Building an Archives for Robotics" presents an overview of The Robotics Project at Carnegie Mellon and the challenges archivists face in preserving the history of a dynamic and growing field.
