Registration open for the next "Bringing Genomic Data to the Clinic Hackathon!"

The University Libraries is partnering with DNAnexus to host a virtual hackathon titled "Bringing Genomic Data to the Clinic Hackathon!" on March 9-11, 2022. Teams will work together to build pipelines to analyze large datasets within a cloud infrastructure. 

After a brief organizational session, teams will spend three days addressing a challenging set of scientific problems related to a group of genomics datasets. Participants will analyze and combine datasets in order to work on crucial problems and opportunities in clinical bioinformatics. Throughout the three days, participants will come together to discuss progress on each of the topics, bioinformatics best practices, coding styles, etc. Manuscripts describing the design and usage of the software tools constructed by each team may be submitted to an appropriate journal for publication.

Find more information and apply for the 2022 hackathon here. Researchers and students at any career stage are welcome to apply. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to collaborate with researchers and contribute to scholarship.
 

Upcoming Genomics Workshop!



Join us in the Genomics Data Carpentry Workshop, organized and delivered by Carnegie Mellon University! The core content of the workshop is developed by Data Carpentry; we are offering it with a pilot add-on module on UK Biobank. 

Genomics Data Carpentry Workshop
March 23-25, 2022
9:00am-1:00pm EST, virtual

Aim: teach data management and analysis for genomics-related research. Topics include: 

  • Project organization and management
  • Introduction to the command line
  • Data Wrangling and Processing
  • Introduction to cloud computing for genomics
Who: Anyone who would like to learn about data management and wrangling workflows in a cloud environment are welcome to attend. You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop. Existing genomics knowledge is helpful but not required. Priorities will be given to CMU affiliates. 

Requirements: Participants must have access to a computer with a Mac, Linux, or Windows OS (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.)

OSDC reimagined as Animal Crossing

Check out this amazing video our Data, Gaming, and Popular Culture Librarian, Hannah Gunderman, made for the Open Science & Data Collaborations Program. One of our favorite things about this video, aside from the cute animals, of course, is that you see hints of many types of research in the background: beakers, soldering irons, maps, globes, equations, and more. Do you see your favorite piece of research equipment in there? Just a reminder that OSDC services are for all types of research!

OSDC @ CMU is looking for a Full-time Project Coordinator to join the Open Science & Data Collaborations team. You will be helping to coordinate program activities, engage researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and beyond, and train researchers for their open science practices and interdisciplinary collaborations. If you are interested in making research more accessible and trustworthy or using data for social good, come work with us!
