Carnegie Mellon's Center for Shared Prosperity (CSP) and University Libraries will host a series of conversations on the book "In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower" by Davarian L. Baldwin. Baldwin’s book takes a critical look at universities as “public good” and examines the relationship between universities and the cities where they reside. While facilitated by staff members at the Center for Shared Prosperity, the meetings are designed to be places of emergent conversation amongst participants with all faculty, staff, and students invited to join. Points of discussion can serve to generate intentional practices and thoughtful critique so as to reimagine more just and equitable relationships both internal to CMU and external to its surrounding community partners. It is not a requirement to attend all the conversation dates.
Each conversation will focus on a specific chapter from the book and participants are asked to have read each section in advance of the meeting. This discussion series will be held on Zoom and, to maintain privacy, will not be recorded. Should you want to join us as we venture into these exciting and boundary-spanning conversations, please sign up at the link below. Seats for the discussion will be limited to 50 persons during the entirety of the Fall semester. A limited number of copies have been made available courtesy of The Center for Shared Prosperity.
