The Art of the Remix Exhibit
- February 26 - March 30, 2018
- First floor, Hunt Library
In the 21st century society, the consumer is no longer passive. The advent of new technologies and media has made the user an active participant. Gone are the days of a Read Only media culture where ideas and materials are provided by a designated source. As we move from analog to digital, this line becomes increasingly blurred. Read & Write Culture encourages a participatory society where users interact and respond to their environment artistically and critically. This not only challenges the nature of authorship but the role of the individual in everyday life.
The Art of the Remix illustrates what happens when consumers become creators. Utilizing the basic principles of Fair Use to take existing materials and “remix” them into something new, this exhibit showcases the work of multiple CMU students from various disciplines on campus. Through their art, we see how individuals reclaim the visual landscape and create 21st century folklore. This is the value of Remix Culture as we look towards the future, and the future is happening now.
