Pledges & Puppies: A Photographic History of Pets in Greek Life at CMU
First floor, Hunt Library
December 6, 2017 - February 16, 2017
This year, the University Libraries started a project to digitize The Thistle, Carnegie Mellon University’s long-standing yearbook that was first published in 1906. This exhibit features highlights from that digitization project: formal portraits of dogs - yes, dogs!
As the digitization team worked their way through more yearbooks, they began to realize that dogs regularly appeared in photographs of student life and social activities, especially fraternities. There is no known documentation about the history of the dogs (or of the iguana named Oog) or the purpose of these photographs, but rather than letting them go unrecognized, this exhibit brings them to light to be appreciated by today’s students and animal lovers.
